HomeMy WebLinkAbout09-20-2018 ATC Correspondence - SLO streets for allDear Active Transportation Committee,
We, the Steering Committee for SLO Streets For All, encourage you to consider funding for the Anholm
Bikeway Plan (ABP) as a high priority item in your budget recommendations.
SLO Streets For All is a group of SLO families who envision a future where our streets are designed
with safety for all roadway users in mind. We are residents of the Anholm neighborhood and/or daily
users of the Anholm corridor. Further, at the recent City Council meeting of September 4th (and in the
months leading up to it), we represented the residents of the Anholm and surrounding neighborhoods
who would like to see a significant meaningful change to create "complete streets."
We believe that funding for the ABP should be a high priority item for the following reasons:
1.As evidenced by our list of supporters that we presented to the City Council (please see below for
details), there is widespread community support, especially in the Anholm and Foothill
neighborhoods which will be most directly impacted, for protected bike lanes in the ABP.
2.Funding the protected bike lanes of the middle and southern sections (from Palm to Ramona) will
provide much needed and desired connectivity to the (already funded) northern section (along
Ramona to Ferrini). Without such connectivity, our community likely will not see the desired
modeshare shifts used to justify current and future projects for complete streets.
3.As evidenced in the agenda correspondence and City Council meeting video, we heard from many
residents who are scared by the the “shared streets” route and who would ride their bikes more
often if there are protected bike lanes. Also, many Anholm residents explicitly stated that they
believed that protected bike lanes would enhance their neighborhood and their community.
Statitistics of SLO city residents who supported protected bike lanes and safer sidewalks in the ABP in
our letter presented to the City Council are:
Total: 509 (this number has increased to 523)
Total Anholm: 83 (this number has increased to 86)
Total between downtown and northern Foothill: 193 (this number has increased to 203)
Thank you for your consideration and for your continued service on this committee promoting
infrastructure to further our City’s goals and plans.
Sincerely,
SLO Streets For All (Steering Committee: Kim Bisheff, Chenin & Garrett Otto, Shannon & Steve Klisch,
Melanie Mills, Jesse Englert)
