September 20, 2018
Dear Active Transportation Committee,
When considering the projects in the upcoming budget cycles, Bike SLO
County encourages you to consider funding for the Anholm Bikeway Plan
as a high priority item in your budget recommendations. We recognize
there are many projects that need to be tackled within the city. Several of
the top priority projects are underway and should continue moving forward.
The Anholm Bikeway project is a key cross town connection that is
important to other Safe Routes to School elements currently being
implemented. The staff and community members like SLO Streets for All's
over 500 supporters have worked hard to get the design approved and
show a great desire to address these key corridor improvements.
New and future developments in the area will impact traffic. Increasing
vehicle traffic can negatively impact people's comfort to get on bikes.
Usually developers are required to mitigate these impacts by contributing to
improvements of surrounding streets or build new infrastructure. We feel
that it would be appropriate that these new developments allocate funds to
the Anholm bikeway project to help implement the design in the upcoming
budge cycles. This could be one method to address budget gaps for this
project without impacting some of the other top priority active transportation
improvements.
Sincerely,
Rick Ellison
