I will not be able to attend the ATC meeting this week, but would like to suggest something that is not on the agenda.
Sharrows on Higuera
I would like to see sharrows added to the center lane of Higuera between Toro and Nipomo for several reasons. The
center lane of Higuera is recognized by Bike Confidence Workshop trainers as the safest lane for cyclists. CVC
21650 states that cyclists are not required to stay to the right on one‐way streets. CVC 21202 allows cyclists to use
whichever lane is safest. Considering the two outside lanes are prone to several hazards including dooring, turning
vehicles, parked delivery trucks and cars entering or leaving a parking spot, the center lane is obviously the safest lane
for cyclists. Cyclists who do use the outside lanes must come to a stop or veer into the center lane to avoid encountered
hazards, creating a dangerous situation for themselves and motorists. Furthermore, traffic speeds on Higuera are slow
enough such that most cyclists can easily keep up with traffic in the center lane. Finally, motorists who see the sharrows
will expect to see cyclists in the center lane, creating a safer travel environment for all. If the ATC recommends this and
it is implemented by the City, I suggest an effort be made to educate the public about this, such as an article in the
Tribune and various social media sites.
