CHC meeting of November 26, 2018
TO: Cultural Heritage Committee
FROM: Brian Leveille, Senior Planner
SUBJECT: (Discussion Item #5) – Proposed demolition of commercial structure at
664 Upham Street.
Discussion: The property owner of 664 Upham Street has applied for a permit to
demolish the warehouse/shop building on the property. Staff requested a cursory
background on the property in order to determine if a more detailed and complete
historical evaluation should be conducted to determine potential historic significance
prior to approving demolition.
The attached background report provides information that the shop building is
associated with a locally historically significant builder, Harry Lyman. The Master
List Harry Lyman House is located at 868 Upham Street. The report finds that
although Harry Lyman is associated with the building for a prospective cabinet and
furniture partnership that apparently never materialized, he sold the property shortly
after it was built, and it is not associated with the residential construction which he is
known for, which occurred between 1908 and the mid 1920’s. The property is not
located in a historic district.
Staff is requesting that the CHC review the property information and discuss at the
meeting if there is any additional information or evaluation that should be completed
to assess any potential historic significance prior to approval of demolition.
