HomeMy WebLinkAbout12/4/2018 Item 13, Andre From:Nick Andre < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:PLA Hello Mayor and Council, I am reaching out to urge the passage of the PLA tonight, excluding the Operating Engineers. Fears that the Operating Engineers could strike if they are not included are vastly overblown. Only 2 entities in the county would be able to sanction a strike, the Central Coast Labor Council and the Building Trades Council, neither of which will do so, since all their other applicable members have signed on to the PLA. If the Operating Engineers were to engage in an unsanctioned strike, the workers under the PLA would continue to work since the strike would be unsanctioned. If the PLA were to be rejected it would put the entire project at risk of an actual sanctioned strike that could cause significantly more harm to the project than if the PLA were passed and the Operating Engineers tried to hold an unsanctioned strike. Additionally, there is no need to include every single union in the PLA. The PLA on the Topaz Solar Farm, that is often cited as a successful example, did not cover all the trades. Passing this PLA is a top priority of both the SLO County Democratic Party leadership and the SLO County Progressives. We must hold true to our values and support local jobs at living wages (something that only the PLA will guarantee), and not allow one minor setback to ruin this for everyone. I urge you to speak with Mark Simonin and David Baldwin if you have not already. Thanks, Nick Andre 1
