Subject:790 Foothill Blvd
Dear Mayor and Council:
Please know, I am vehemently opposed to the development proposed for 790 Foothill Boulevard in San Luis Obispo. It is
too big for the lot and space available. Its design, like the behemoth sitting at 22 Chorro, is inappropriate for the
neighborhood. These developments are creating a valley of concrete on Foothill and destroying the character of our
neighborhood.
Like many of my neighbors, I do not oppose housing at 790 Foothill (though loss of the mature trees would be a waste).
Rather, I'd prefer to see a development that maintains the character of the neighborhood, conforms to zoning and
design policies, without burdening the area with more traffic and congestion.
The city, in its wisdom, created height restrictions, set-back and parking requirements for good reasons. Continually
waiving these restrictions renders our land-use and zoning policies completely ineffective and creates an urbanized
environment that undermines our quality of life.
As I understand it, 790 Foothill will be another super luxury, very expensive student housing project. Projects like this do
nothing to improve affordability, housing access, or help house students in decent conditions.
Not every neighborhood should be expected to solve all the world’s problems in terms of housing, climate change,
traffic, or transportation. We can all, certainly, do our part, as my neighbors and I do with solar energy and water
conservation, among other measures. Please do not ask us to continue to sacrifice our quality of life for inappropriate,
ineffective, neighborhood-destroying, luxury projects like 790 Foothill.
I strongly urge you to oppose this project in its current form. Thank you.
