HomeMy WebLinkAbout1/15/2019 Item 9, Smith Family From:Jennifer Smith < To:Harmon, Heidi; Stewart, Erica; Pease, Andy; Gomez, Aaron; Christianson, Carlyn; CityClerk Subject:790 Foothill Appeal Dear Council Members, Please carefully reconsider the 790 Foothill project. I imagine you have become involved in city government because you genuinely care for this special town we are all lucky enough to call home. We all have one goal and it is to accommodate growth while trying to maintain SLO’s unique and special character. We all would love to see the vacant McDonalds lot come to life with something IN LINE with the heart of SLO. The project as is absolutely does not align with this. Too tall. Too big. Too generic. Grossly expensive. Our town and our residents deserve better. Please be the council you were voted to be. Be in charge, not some out of town developer that has one goal and it has nothing to do with maintaining SLO’s unique charm or character. Please counter with a development that is within the height and size guidelines, that were implemented to help maintain quality of life for our neighborhoods and community. Please center with housing that is affordable for students and the growing workforce living in SLO. Please counter with a smaller project...the “affordable housing” percentage loophole will still be there! Your hands are not tied. Please look at the developers completed project, The Academy. It is a ghost town over there. Only 1/3 full. A luxurious student housing monstrosity that obviously is not wanted. The Affordable Housing units in building? No one lives in them. HACSLO reportedly hasn’t even heard of them. The residents have spoken. The students have spoken. It’s time to listen. Please stop stripping this town of its charm and help us grow in the right ways for San Luis Obispo. SLO isn’t (wasn’t?) Anytown, California...but the past few years have proven that our council doesn’t appear to have the same love affair with SLO as it once did. Please consider the number of residents who have voiced their concerns by email, letter, vocally, spoken at meetings vs the number of residents who have shown support. We know you now the right thing to do. So please do it. No one is saying don’t build, everyone is saying please build the right thing for our community! Please reconsider. Thank you for your time and Happy New Year. Brett, Jennifer, Chase and Bryce Smith 1
