The CHC should discuss any needed modifications are necessary and provide direction. Jack House and Gardens Robert Edgar Jack, a banker, land developer, entrepreneur, and politician, built this home in 1878. He contributed to the commerce, community planning, and development of the City of San Luis Obispo from 1875 to 1899, including negotiating with the Southern Pacific Railroad to bring passenger service to the City on May 5, 1894. In 1870, Jack married Nellie Hollister. An avid reader, exceptional hostess, and amateur horticulturalist, Nellie Jack grew flowers, exotic plants, and trees, donating and planting trees throughout the county. The Jacks had five children: Ella, Gertrude, Ethel, Robert Jr., and Howard. Descendants donated the Jack house and its contents and grounds to the City of San Luis Obispo on March 10, 1975.
