Jack House and Gardens
Robert Edgar Jack, a banker, land developer, entrepreneur, and
politician, built this home in 1878. He contributed to the commerce,
community planning, and development of the City of San Luis Obispo
from 1875 to 1899, including negotiating with the Southern Pacific
Railroad to bring passenger service to the City on May 5, 1894.
In 1870, Jack married Nellie Hollister. An avid reader, exceptional
hostess, and amateur horticulturalist, Nellie Jack grew flowers, exotic
plants, and trees, donating and planting trees throughout the county. The
Jacks had five children: Ella, Gertrude, Ethel, Robert Jr., and Howard.
Descendants donated the Jack house and its contents and grounds to
the City of San Luis Obispo on March 10, 1975.
