HomeMy WebLinkAbout2/4/2019 Item 1, Marx From:Jan Marx < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Make Open Space Preservation a Major City Goal Dear City Council, Since you have each campaigned and succeeded in being elected to office, you must be keenly aware that the only people who are eligible to vote for you are city residents, not tourists, not workers who live elsewhere, not students living on campus. Ours is a representative government, which means that SLO City voters expect you to represent their values and priorities. Once again, as every year since resident surveys have been conducted, Open Space Preservation has been ranked one of the highest budget priorities in the Community Priorities Survey. This goal also ranked number one in the LUCE Update survey. Residents felt deeply disappointed--some would go so far as to say betrayed--when the last Council ignored their top priority by not choosing Open Space Preservation as a Major City Goal for the 2017-19. The last Council did not even make Open Space Preservation an "Other Important Objective." Resident are hopeful that the new Council will not also turn its back on Open Space. Each of you made campaign promises that you would listen to the voters, represent all city residents and not just a favored few, and be our voice. We voters have spoke loud and clear about our top priority for decades, Open Space Preservation. Now is your chance to actually live up to your promises. There is still much to be done to complete our Greenbelt, support the positions of Natural Resource Manager and City Biologist and improve maintenance of our precious, unique and much loved Open Space. This is your opportunity to be true to your word and prove to the voters that you truly deserved their votes. I urge you to make Open Space Preservation a Major City Goal. Thank you for your service to the City, Jan Howell Marx, 6 year City Council member, 6 year Mayor, 30 year resident, 265 Albert Drive, SLO 1
