Hi,
Would you please clarify the regulations for walking on a bike path in SLO?
A friend and I were walking on the bike path along the RR tracks in SLO when we passed another acquaintance coming in
the opposite direction with a dog. We were on the right hand side of the path walking south. The surprise acquaintance
was on the right hand side of the path walking north. When we recognized each other, we met in the middle of both
lanes and between three adults and a dog, we took up a lot of the space on the path. Unawares to us, a bicyclist came
at a very high speed heading north and notified us by saying “on your right” only about 5 feet away. The friend that was
walking north was almost hit as the bicyclist sped by. The bicyclist did not even slow down, but shouted back to us that
we needed to get out of the way of bicyclists on the bike path. He repeated that the path was for bikes.
I can understand that we should have been more aware of our circumstances. But it is hard not to believe that the
bicyclist was in the wrong for almost running us over.
We like walking on the bike path. Please clarify the expectations for both walkers and bicyclists.
Thank you.
Paddy
