Subject: Requests of the TR Conservation Legacy Grove Project Committee
Dear Derek,
On behalf of the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Legacy Grove Committee, a volunteer committee under the auspices
of the San Luis Obispo Arts Council (ARTS Obispo), I am writing to you, to the Council, and to the staff with the following
requests as to our application for "Privately Financed Public Art" in Mitchell Park.
1. Due to the Council's decision at its last meeting (February 5) to agendize a discussion of a "monuments policy"
for the City of San Luis Obispo, we request that the City suspend processing of our application until such a policy
has been developed and adopted by the City. You've indicated that this may take 6 months.
2. We request that our Committee be fully involved in the development of this policy, with the understanding that
this process will of course include other residents of San Luis Obispo. We request that the City take appropriate
steps to include residents who identify as Native American, particularly Chumash (yak titvu tityu yak tilhini).
3. We request that our Committee be permitted the right to modify our application, or to withdraw it entirely as to
the use of Mitchell Park, at any point in this process should it become evident that the project would not be
consistent with the policy that is evolving.
4. If we decide to withdraw our application, we reserve the right to offer the centerpiece of this project, a statue of
Theodore Roosevelt as conceived by Paula Zima, to other parties who would be to accept it, in consultation
with our donors and supporters.
Finally, we request that each member of the Council work with us to schedule a meeting at a mutually convenient place
and time in order to discuss the project and engage in a productive dialogue about it. We call upon each individual
Councilmember to schedule such a meeting, and to respond to this request with a proposed schedule that works for
you. We will make every effort to have a representative of the committee attend with Ms. Zima available by telephone.
Finally, we wish to pass on a statement from Paula Zima, received today after reviewing a letter of opposition from Fred
Collins:
I'm extremely sorry that this project has taken such a turn. I would love to have the opportunity to put my skills
to use and create a sculpture of a person I've felt close to for most of my life.
I understand the sadness and animosity of the First Nation people at having their lands stolen and the Christian
culture forced upon them as has happened to so many other peoples during our long human history. For me the
goal is to learn to live on this Earth, our one small blue beloved planet, in peace. To do so, we need to move
forward in all interactions, to forgive, learn from what we did that was right and good. To tear down our history,
or never commemorate it in the first place is short-sighted. My preference would be to augment offensive
historical monuments, with new ones, with themes that examine the times from other angles.
The current political atmosphere is polarized, which prevents discussion. My work has always been about
healing. The Bear and Chumash child in the Mission Plaza was my way of honoring the major life forms that
existed on the Central Coast, before the influx of the Spanish and other Europeans. It was approved of by the
Chumash elders at the time. If a sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt, no matter how benign, brings up feelings of
animosity and trauma, then I don't want to proceed with the proposed project.
I thank you all for the support.
