HomeMy WebLinkAboutItem 1 - 02-06-2019 HRC Draft Minutes Draft Minutes Human Relations Commission Wednesday, February 6, 2019 Regular Meeting of the Human Relations Commission CALL TO ORDER A Regular Meeting of the San Luis Obispo Human Relations Commission was called to order on Wednesday, February 6, 2019 at 5:00 p.m. in the Council Hearing Room, located at 990 Palm Street, San Luis Obispo, California, by Chair Welts. ROLL CALL Present: Commissioners Bill Crewe, Barrie DuBois, Michael Hopkins, Emily Rosten, Vice-Chair Carol Sexton and Chair Nancy Welts Absent: None Staff: Cara Vereschagin, Assistant Planner; Hannah Clark, Planning Intern PUBLIC COMMENT FOR ITEMS NOT ON THE AGENDA None --End of Public Comment-- APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Consideration of Minutes of the Regular Human Relations Commission Meeting of December 5, 2018. ACTION: MOTION BY CHAIR WELTS, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER CREWE CARRIED 6-0-1 to approve the minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Human Relations Commission of December 5, 2018. PRESENTATIONS 2. HATE CRIMES PRESENTATION A discussion on hate crimes was led by Detective Walsh from the City of San Luis Obispo Police Department. Information was shared on current initiatives the Police Department is doing to crack down on offenders and to increase awareness of hate City of San Luis Obispo, Title, Subtitle Draft Minutes Human Relations Commission Meeting of February 6, 2019 Page 2 crimes. The goal is to ultimately achieve a more inclusive environment and acceptance of community diversity. BUSINESS ITEMS 3. Assign Subcommittee to Review 2019-2020 Grant-in-Aid Applications Assistant Planner Vereschagin led a brief discussion regarding the development of a subcommittee to review the 2019-2020 Grant-in-Aid Applications. Commissioners Rosten, DuBois, and Crewe volunteered to be the subcommittee members. COMMISSION & STAFF COMMUNICATIONS 4. Governor Newsom’s Proposed Housing Budget for California This letter was drafted by Commissioner Hopkins to encourage City Council to actively support upcoming housing-related funding opportunities, that will in-turn support City housing and climate action goals. ACTION: MOTION BY VICE-CHAIR SEXTON, SECOND BY COMMISSIONER ROSTEN, CARRIED 6-0-1 to approve the drafted letter to City Council to actively support upcoming housing-related funding opportunities. 5. Staff & Commissioner Communications Assistant Planner Vereschagin communicated that the HRC applicant interviews will take place on March 4, 2019 from 11:45am-2pm and new appointments will take place on the March 19, 2019 City Council meeting. Commissioner Hopkins asked to prioritize the diversity discussion by putting it on the agenda for next month’s meeting on March 6, 2019. Commissioner Rosten updated the HRC on funding issues a GIA recipient has been experiencing with CenCal Health on housing vulnerable populations. Commissioner DuBois introduced a presentation for the Innocence Project that will be held on Sunday February 10 at 7pm for all who are interested. Commissioner Crewe discussed the Veterans Treatment Court at the Court House where veterans will share their stories and discuss how they are improving. Chair Welts discussed the 5 Cities Diversity Coalition Meeting, along with the HASLO Housing Workshop, which will take place on February 14th. She also reminded the Commission the annual Advisory Body Recognition Event will be held on March 19th from 5- 6pm.
