UNITED STATES BICYCLE ROUTE SYSTEM: ROUTE 95 (FUKUSHIMA – 40 MINUTES) Active Transportation Committee Agenda March 21, 2019 Page 2 The United States Bicycle Route System (USBRS) is a developing national network of public bike routes. To date, nearly 12,000 miles of the route have been established in 25 states. The route network utilizes already existing paved routes and the typical user of the facility is a touring cyclist with a fairly high level of riding confidence on long-distance routes. Currently under consideration is the alignment for Route 95, connecting the Canadian border with the Mexican border and generally following the Pacific coastline. The City of San Luis Obispo is a proposed portion of the route and the committee should provide input on a preferred route alignment as it winds through the city limits. The USBRS does not provide funding for improvements to routes but provides signing guidance should a local agency decide to provide it. More information on the USBRS can be found at: https://www.adventurecycling.org/routes-and-maps/us-bicycle-route-system/. The Adventure Cycling Association, a national bicycle touring organization, has been taking the lead on gathering local input for the route and has made the following recommendation for a possible route alignment through the City of San Luis Obispo at the following link: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/17679043 Committee members should consider a preferred alignment, including the recommendation from the Adventure Cycling Association, as well as the conveniences and local points of interest that the route could highlight for a national audience.
