Hi Ron and the Tree Committee:
Re: Comments on the REI proposed tree removals
I'm against any tree removals within the parking lot of the Promenade near the REI project. The Tribune reported that, I
believe, 24 trees are proposed for removal associated with this project. I viewed the parking lot and found only Chinese
elms and London plane trees. Some of the plane trees are planted in rows, and they are not doing well. But, they
probably had no irrigation or nutrients. The City should instead be requiring that these and all the trees get more than
adequate life support. A new, enhanced irrigation system and ongoing growth maintenance is more necessary than any
tree removals. Replacing these trees with younger ones will delay the benefits of shading and carbon removal from the
atmosphere which the current trees will otherwise offer. The Chinese elms offer a surprisingly beautiful row along the
drive next to Tahoe Joe's, and they appear to be very healthy but needing pruning.
I don't know who is the city planner, since I don't find this project on the City's map of current development, so I am
copying Doug Davidson, Deputy Director, for his referral.
Thank you,
James Lopes
