HomeMy WebLinkAbout6/4/2019 Item 14, Englert From:Jesse Englert < To:E-mail Council Website Subject:Agenda Item 14 - ADOPTION OF 2019-21 FINANCIAL PLAN AND 2019-20 BUDGET City Council, I'm writing to once again express gratitude to the previous City Council for approving the Anholm Neighborhood Greenway project and for the current City Council continuing to see it through. I encourage you adopt the 2019-2021 financial plan and budget with that project fully funded. Since that project includes a protected bicycle facility I thought you may find this article interesting when considering future bicycle related infrastructure: https://usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/protect-yourself-separated-bike-lanes-means-safer-streets-study-says/ I know you're busy so here is the TL:DR version of some key points: * A 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all users of the road. * Researchers found that painted bike lanes provided no improvement on road safety. And their review earlier this year of shared roadways — where bike symbols are painted in the middle of a lane — revealed that it was actually safer to have no bike markings at all. * Bike facilities end up slowing cars down, even when a driver hits another driver, it’s less likely to be a fatality because it’s happening at a slower speed Hope you're having a great day! Best Regards, Jesse Englert Chorro St (Anholm Neighborhood) 1
