Dear Human Relations Commission Members,
Thank you for your recommendation for fiscal year 2019‐20 of a $1,000 grant to Literacy for Life.
Literacy for Life is a non‐profit organization whose mission statement is to “transform the community, empowering
individuals by removing barriers to success and strengthening relationships through the power of literacy."
We recruit and train community members to become volunteer tutors in San Luis Obispo City as well as throughout San
Luis Obispo County. Our trained tutors work one‐on‐one with adults 16 and older who need to either learn or improve
basic English language skills.
Literacy is a basic and necessary tool for the advancement and betterment of an individual's quality of life. It is a core
skill that once learned becomes the foundation for individuals and families to rely less on others and much more on their
abilities to learn, improve, and succeed.
We are very dedicated to providing children access to literacy through the adults in their lives. We know that by tutoring
adults with children living within the same household, we are continuing a cycle of literacy. These adult learners learn
how to read to their children by practicing with children’s books that they can then take home and begin their at‐home
library. Often, the free books they receive from our program are the first in their home. Our program normalizes literacy
so that it becomes a necessary fun everyday routine for everyone in the household.
We currently have two San Luis centers plus an additional eight centers located throughout San Luis Obispo County. In
the city of San Luis Obispo, we serve 73 resident learners and 45 resident volunteer tutors. This number also means we
help the children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other extended family members who are children of 73 resident
learners. For all of our learners, 412 countywide, we provide trained volunteer tutors, free books and learning
materials.

Please take the time to review the attached document. It is a few pages from our most recent fiscal year, 2017‐18,
report. It’s a very clear listing of the numerous literacy learning goals that our learners strive to meet and strongly
illustrates the value of our work.
After your review, please consider changing your fiscal year 2019‐20 grant recommendation to Literacy for Life from
$1,000 to our request of $5,000. Thank you! Thank you!
