Special Meeting of the Tourism Business Improvement District Board
CALL TO ORDER
A Special Meeting of the San Luis Obispo Tourism Business Improvement District Board was called to
order on Wednesday, May 8, 2019 at 10:10 a.m. in Embassy Suites, located at 333 Madonna Inn, San Luis
Obispo, California, by Chair Skidmore.
ROLL CALL
Present: Board Members Dean Hutton, LeBren Young-Harris, Pragna Patel-Mueller (10:18 a.m.),
Vice Chair Matthew Wilkins and Chair Bruce Skidmore
Absent: Board Member Nipool Patel
Staff: Tourism Manager Molly Cano and Tourism Coordinator Chantal Burns

Maggie Cox the President of Central Coast AMF Media Group introduced Val Vaz, the Diector of Account
Services for the Central Coast to the Board.

1. HDL ROLLOUT
Natalie Harnett from the City of San Luis Obispo’s Finance Department introduced the HDL rollout
and gave a visual tutorial of how TBID properties will be able to submit their monthly TOT online.

2. MARKETING AGENCY MONTHLY REPORT
Representatives from AMF and Matchfire presented a review of April 2019 marketing activities,
website and social media metrics, upcoming planned activities, and responded to Board questions.

2. CHAMBER MONTHLY REPORT
Director of Communications and Business Education, Jacqui Clark-Charlesworth from the SLO
Chamber of Commerce presented the April public relation highlights.

BUSINESS ITEMS
1. 2019-20 MARKETING PLAN
Tourism Manager Cano recapped the work of the Marketing Committee and agencies on the 2019 -20
Marketing Plan. Agency representatives reviewed the presented plan and address concerns and
questions from board members.

ACTION: MOTION BY COMMITTEE MEMBER WILKINS, SECONDED BY COMMITTEE
MEMBER SKIDMORE, CARRIED 5-0-1, TO ADOPT THE PRESENTED MARKETING PLAN
WITH DIRECTION TO THE AGENCY TO REVIEW THE CURRENT DEMOGRAPHIC
STRATEGIES AND ADDITION OF A VALUE-MINDED PERSONA.
2. EVENT PROMOTION APPLICATION
The TBID Board discussed the application received for the 2019 Boots and Brews Country Music
Festival event in September 2019. Staff provided members with the 2018 Boots and Brews Country
Music Festival final report and statistics.
Public Comment
Dusty Colyer-Worth from the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce provided feedback on the event
organizers and smooth event process.

ACTION: MOTION BY COMMITTEE MEMBER WILKINS, SECONDED BY COMMITTEE
MEMBER SKIDMORE, CARRIED 5-0-1, TO FUND THE 2019 BOOTS AND BEWS COUNTRY
MUSIC FESTIVAL $12,000 TO BE USED FOR OUT OF AREA MARKETING AND
ADVERTISING BASED ON THE APPLICATION PRESENTED.
TBID LIAISON REPORTS AND COMMUNICATION
1. Hotelier Update –
• The La Quinta has officially opened
• The Hotel SLO team has expanded and Cano will be meeting with them on May 16th.
• General comments on how the opening of Leroy’s had impacted other Monterey Street
restaurants.
2. Management Committee Update - May 2, 2019 minutes in packet for review.
3. Marketing Committee Update – April 15, 2019 and May 1, 2019 minutes are in the packet for
review.
4. PCC Update – April 10, 2019 minutes in packet for review.
5. SLO CAL Update - report given at this point.
6. Tourism Program Update –
• VisitSLO.com updates
• The Conference Center RFP has opened

• CCTC has onboarded their new agency Nobal
• Strategic Partners are currently being budgeted for and discussed by Management Committee
• IPW and other events were reported on by staff
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting was adjourned at 12:08 p.m. The next Tourism Business Improvement District Board meeting
is scheduled for Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at 10:00 a.m., at Embassy Suites, 333 Madonna Road, San
Luis Obispo, CA.
