9. Arborists Report: Revised Tree Ordinance was presented to City Council July 2,
2019. The City Council concurred with the Tree Committee's recommendations and by 5-0
vote, authorized the introduction of the Ordinance. The second reading of the Ordinance is
scheduled for July 16, 2019 at the regularly schedule City Council meeting.
ADJOURNMENT
The next Regular Meeting of the Tree Committee is scheduled for Monday, August 26,
2019, at 5:00 p.m., in Conference Room A of the Corporation Yard, 25 Prado Road, San Luis
Obispo, California.

CALL TO ORDER
A Regular Meeting of the San Luis Obispo Tree Committee was called to order on Monday, May
20, 2019 at 5:03 p.m. in Conference Room A, located at 25 Prado Road, San Luis Obispo,
California, by Chair Loosley.

Reason for tree removal
Tipuana Tipu tree at 404 Corrida Drive
1. Installation of solar power
Inspired by our Cities goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035, we are scheduled to install solar
power on the south face of our roof in September. During the on-site solar analysis, it was
determined that the shade cast by the Tipuana tree would significantly limit our ability to
generate power.
2. Structural concerns
The crotch of the tree has a cavity at head height that is trapping water and debris. From a
structural standpoint, it's possible that the tree will split at this point during a strong wind event.
We are concerned about the potential damage to our home, parked cars and streetlight.
3. Health of Tree
The tree has been in a steady decline in recent years. I suspect partially due to the heavy insect
infestation, which is evident by small dropping debris found on our vehicles on a regular basis.
4. Aggressive surface roots
The surface roots are damaging the new sidewalk treatment, and the roadway has been
reconstructed because of surface root damage. Significant vertical separation has occurred on
the sidewalk, resulting in a tripping hazard. The street gutter is holding back water, which in
turn, eventually 'feeds' the surface roots as the water slowing passes through the gaps between
the gutter and asphalt, which only encourages the surface roots to expand.
5. Canopy conflict with street light
The canopy of the tree is in conflict with effective street lighting.

To Whom It May Concern:
The Parkwood Village Condominium's HOA Board of Directors held a Landscape Committee Meeting on
May 14, 2019 to discuss tree removals at the Parkwood Village Condominium Complex. The members in
attendance gave input about which trees they would like to see stay and which trees were too close to
the buildings and sidewalks causing damage to either hardscape, landscape irrigation or home water
services.
There was a round table discussion about replacement tree plantings, timing of work and the impact on
the water usage for the complex. The board then instructed Jim Burrows of JBLA Landscape Architects
to procure the necessary permits from the City of San Luis Obispo to begin the tree removal process.
