Mayor Harmon and City Council,
I applaud the on-going efforts by City Staff and Council members to move ahead with the segment of the
Railroad Safety Trail that will run from Taft to Pepper streets. I know this has been a very lengthy process, with
lots of moving parts and challenging negotiations with the Union Pacific railroad.
Bike SLO County is excited to see, despite all of those challenges, the pending acquisition of properties and
authorization of funds for construction that will bring the City of SLO one step closer to building a fantastic
piece of Active Transportation infrastructure. The resulting path and bridge will serve not only the many people
who presently walk and bike through this corridor on a daily basis, but attract others to embrace safe, active
transportation and recreation. The resulting infrastructure will simultaneously help the city achieve its climate
action & mode share goals and the ongoing efforts to become carbon neutral by 2035. Thank you for your
leadership in this area.
In conclusion, I urge you to approve Agenda Item 10 - Railroad Safety Trail (RRST) on August 20, 2019.
Best regards,
Rick Ellison
