Subject: September 3rd vote on All Electric Homes
I oppose this new ordinance as I believe it will increase the cost of all housing and rentals in the City of San Luis Obispo.
It is already unaffordable for the working class to live within the city. The City is creating a more elite city where only the
rich will be able to live.
I believe the action is premature and does not consider the economic impact on residents, small business, employees
and families. Community should care about all citizens and seek input from all. This is just recently announced that
action was to be taken and with such a short implementation time frame.
People need time to adjust, plan, budget to what is a MAJOR policy shift.
We are not yet able to acquire 100% carbon free electricity. We need additional infrastructure and this is several years
away. To produce electricity with natural gas requires 3 BTU to create 1 BTU, so why not use gas directly until 100%
1
carbon free is available. Note all electricity created goes thru the same transmission lines and cannot be separated as
carbon free.
WHY the big hurry to implement. WHY push ahead and leave residents without a choice in heating their homes… WHY
do you the council think you know what is best for all residents.
You say choice will be available but until the process, policies and penalties are defined it remains an open question.
I am concerned with the way the council is limiting participation and open discussion. It appears that there are still
major unanswered questions.
My concern also is that if the council pushes this through it will then want to require retrofitting all homes.
I appreciate you all have a tough job but most of us prefer to be an all American City not and Elitist City.
