Please do not ban the use of Natural Gas! It is very short sighted and should not be approved!

Natural gas is one of the cleanest burning energy sources and is extremely plentiful. It is s byproduct of
extracting oil and is such a cheap form of energy. We are loosing one of the most efficient and extremely clean
forms of energy production in the coming years as Diablo is decommissioned! We’ve been burning natural gas
in our home for nearly 100 years with very few accidents so I would also categorize it as a safe energy form.
Propane is much more expensive and requires transportation via trucks, natural gas is piped where ever it is
needed or required.
It is my understanding that the council will be voting to eliminate the use of natural gas in all new homes and
businesses. Is this the case? If so, it is very short sighted! Our new building code now requires that solar be
installed on every home, this is a good idea however, solar Panels only last 20 years or so and then will
become hazardous waste.
I have a couple of ideas to share as follows:
1) The Solar and Wind Turbine farms we currently have are often turned off due to over production as our
electrical grid can only handle what is demanded of it, there is no way to store the extra energy. I propose that
we build a series of HydroElectric dams, like the Salt River Project in Arizona, and use that extra energy to
pump water upstream so that the potential energy can then be used at night when the sun is not shining, or
the wind is not blowing. This is far superior an ideal than storing the energy in giant batteries. I go back to the
hazardous waste thing again.
Secondly, we need to begin recycling our nuclear fuel rods, like France has done for decades and we used to
until President Carter “Banned” that practice when he was President for a minute, that too was very short
sighted. The 1/2 life of fully recycled fuel rods ends up being about 50 years, if my memory serves. Our fuel
rods being stored at Diablo have about a 500 year 1/2 life!

Let’s put our heads together and do the right things for our future! Not allowing Natural Gas to be used in
New Construction is “Short Sighted”. It is safe, plentiful and does very little in the way of harming the
environment! That is why this move is being considered, is it not?
All the best, thank you for your quick response. I hope that you will strongly oppose this move.
Cheers!
Best Regards,
John

Thank you for writing in John. Can you please expand with the details on how this is short‐sighted? I want to
be sure that I understand your point more fully. To be clear, we are not banning the use of gas.
Thank you, Mayor Harmon
