We routinely building all electric, or carbon-free residences. On certain parts of Cape Cod, there’s no natural gas (and there was a moratorium on new gas hookups) so creating all electric houses was a no-brainer. But even when gas is available, we are increasingly concerned that the natural gas that we get is unsafe, unreliable and dirty since it is coming from fracking and other non-renewable resources. With the current technology we have – mini split heat pumps, insulation and photovoltaic systems – designing all electric happens to be both cost effective and environmentally responsible. It is our first choice for heating, cooling, cooking and other energy demands. And if we on Cape Cod can accomplish this – building net-zero all electric houses - you certainly can in sunny California! It’s an admirable goal, and as a member of my town of Barnstable’s Energy Committee, I wish this was something we were pursuing!
