Subject:Addition to Electric Appliance Ordinance
Council,
In the past 2 days, I have received information that I would like to add to my expression of support to transitioning to
cleaner appliances.
Yesterday, the EPA announced an effort that is rolling back methane emission standards, which is one of the most
volatile natural gasses (~23x the warming effect of CO2.) In operations such as hydraulic fracturing, excess methane that
can not be transported is simply vented into our atmosphere, continuing to warm it. This means sourcing natural gas is
about to get much dirtier, and emit more greenhouse gases so any efforts to paint gas as clean energy is simply
greenwashing.
In addition, as of right now interest from the Western States Petroleum Alliance (Parent organization of CARE) has
submitted about 45 responses regarding opposition of this ordinance. Individuals have submitted about 15 responses in
support of the ordinance. While 45 may seem like the overwhelming majority, they represent one well financed
program. The 15 responses in support of this all come from 15 individuals, representing their livelihoods and their want
for a cleaner planet. This is a demonstration of how much power the fossil fuel industry holds, and is using it against the
citizens of San Luis Obispo. Regarding climate change, we must be fighting the fossil fuel industry, not growing it.
From,
Strowbridge Watson
