Subject:Let's meet our 2035 carbon neutrality goal
Hello council,
The city of SLO, as I'm sure you are aware, has a carbon neutrality goal of 2035. This is an ambitious goal, in fact it's the
most ambitious in the nation. I'm very proud of the city for having the courage to set such a goal and to be forward
thinkers and planners. To reach such an ambitious goal, every action has to be executed swiftly and without
unwarranted hesitation. These reach codes will incentivize electric buildings, which is exactly the kind of swift action we
need to be taking to meet our 2035 goal. In 2018 with the Measure G campaign, we experienced what happens when
we listen to the lies and misinformation perpetuated by special interest groups: we the people lose. Please look beyond
what the opposition says, but instead critically think about it.
Think about how the industry has money to lose if we pass reach codes, and how much they will distort facts to protect
their bottom line.
Scientists tell us we have 11 years to drastically cut our carbon emissions or we will initiate irreversible climate feedback
loops. As a young person, that is terrifying; but there is something we can do about it. Let's stop protecting the fossil fuel
industry who knows their days are numbered and are causing enormous harm, and let's instead focus on the future we
can build together. A future with a livable planet because we stepped up and took bold, but not always easy, steps
before it was too late. You joined Monterey Bay Community Power, which was an excellent first step. Please continue
the good work by also passing these electrification reach codes.
Thank you,
Emmet Arries
