It’s great to hear you are considering leading this effort to transition buildings toward fossil freedom. I’m now an Environmental Quality Commissioner in Menlo Park and we are also doing our part to push for electrification! Feel free to ask me about our Reach Code variation that simplifies the Reach Code by no longer allowing gas for space heating or water heating, while deferring the issue of cooking and fossil fireplaces. Since there are better cleaner more efficient electric alternatives, I don’t think the cooking or fossil fireplaces are going to be worth the thousands of dollars of gas pipe expense. So I don’t imagine many folks will make the costly choice to bring dangerous dirty methane into their homes with the Menlo Park type of Reach Code. I’m also a strong supporter of CCAs, renewable energy, electrification, and solar training like that provided by SunWork.org in SLO. It was through volunteering with SunWork that I learned enough to be able to retrofit my home water heater and space heat to be powered by low cost solar electricity. But being a Cal Poly grad helped too. (Yay for learning by doing! ) Best wishes on the transition toward a climate safe future. -Tom Kabat ENVE ‘82 650 924 8525 1
