Re: City of San Luis Obispo Clean Energy Choice Program
The Environmental Center of San Luis Obispo (ECOSLO) has been working since 1971 to
protect natural resources and quality of life in San Luis Obispo County through environmental
education,advocacy,and action.
ECOSLO strongly supports the City of San Luis Obispo's proposed Clean Energy Choice
Program, which is intended to promote a transition from natural gas infrastructure to clean,
efficient electric power in residential and commercial buildings within the City. Homes and
buildings are a major source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for roughly 25
percent of GHG emissions statewide.
The benefits of building decarbonization are numerous: reducing both outdoor and indoor air
pollution and the associated health risks; reducing energy costs for consumers; reducing
homebuilding costs, thus potentially helping to alleviate the state's affordable housing crisis; and
helping both the state and individual cities such as San Luis Obispo meet their climate action
targets.
The residents of San Luis Obispo have consistently supported taking meaningful action in our local
community to address the global climate crisis. The time to act is now. We must be purposeful in
the actions our community takes to protect and preserve our community and our planet.
Kind regards,
Mary A. Ciesinski
