Re: Support natural gas infrastructure in future SLO construction plan
Dear Mayor Harmon and Councilwoman Stewart,
I write this letter to disapprove of Council planning discussion on limiting future natural gas
infrastructure in residential construction. Natural gas is as a key component of diverse clean
energy infrastructure. Natural gas should be an encouraged priority to increase by planning and
design, not decrease. Natural gas contributes to a balanced clean safe healthy environment.
A pillar of sustainable cleaner energy policy is diversity. Diversity means maintaining multiple
cleaner energy sources by incorporating natural gas in the portfolio that powers lives, supports
self-reliance public safety, and maintains efficient on -demand residential quality of life living
standard for cooking and heating. Natural gas should be similar to solar: mandatory where
available.
Natural gas increases sustainability by improving public safety self-reliance. In event of an
extended electric service brownout, blackout, or natural disaster, homes supplied with natural
gas continue to safely care for themselves. Residents cook and boil water without dependence
on emergency public services. Responsible elected politicians concerned for sustainability and
public safety should not consider prohibiting natural gas from the future energy portfolio.
Limiting future natural gas infrastructure is an assault on community safety self-reliance; an
assault on personal freedom and choice. SLO residents do not benefit from naive poorly
informed planning staff or NGO advocates dictating choices.
With this letter, I urge you to not follow irresponsible voices, whose fear of the effects of
human activity on climate exceeds their knowledge, driving them to recommend poor
community sustainable energy choices that include restricting natural gas infrastructure.
Avoid providing a forum for fringe voices advocating with ill-conceived political motives. They
fail to grasp how use of clean safe abundant natural gas is part of the solution for
environmental quality and sustainability, not the problem.
Sincerely,
1
ck Rabin, SLO resident
