San Luis Obispo Architectural Review Commission
Dear Committee Members,
Thank you for your time and public service. Bike SLO County would like to point out a few items
with regards to bicycle facilities on a couple of the projects on the September 16 agenda in
hopes that your committee add these recommendations to the Planning Commission for
consideration. We feel these recommendations will be better suited for bike riders, help
encourage better transportation choices, and meets the Community Design Guide intent.
Item #1 - 1911 Johnson Ave
We recommend changing the style of bike rack proposed on Detail 16 Sheet L102 to Peak Rack
style bike racks. The proposed bike rack style tends to be not well suited for parking bikes.
Bikes are not well supported and tend to fall o ver in this style of bike rack. The Peak Rack is
made locally and is well liked in the bike community. It is not clear from the plans how much bike
parking is currently available, but it seems that this calculation should be included and new bike
parking should accommodate the appropriate number of spaces per city standards.
Item #2 – 609 Palm St
Detail R10 on sheet L2.1 in the plans indicate an inverted "U" bike rack is proposed. Though this
meets the City Standards, the standard and Community Design Guide also specifically call out
Peak Racks. The Peak Rack standard 2-bike Peak rack, or two 2-bike Peak racks back to back
to fit 4 bikes is much more accommodating of bikes in the same space, a variety of bike styles,
and helps prevent the bikes from falling over. Ideally we would like to see the City adopt this as
their standard for future projects.
With regards to the enclosed bike parking area, it would be recommended that some of this bike
parking not be enclosed by a fence/gate. Opening a gate and rolling a bike into the area is
cumbersome so it would be beneficial to have covered space available outside of a gate. It is
not clear, but maybe the gated area is intended for long term bike storage, but we would
recommend increasing clear space in front of the rack to help maneuver bikes in and out of this
area.
Additionally, e-bikes and cargo bikes are becoming more and more popular. Though this may be
beyond the ARC's purview, we think that it would be beneficial to have power outlets nearby to
allow charging of e-bikes, as well as additional standard single level Peak Racks in this area to
accommodate larger cargo bikes.
Thank you for your consideration.
