Subject:ATP Pedestrian Crossings
Dear ATC,
Here are a several suggestions for improved intersections to be added to the ATP.
Intersection Improvements
1. Johnson at San Luis Drive (this was recommended as a bike improvement previously)
2. Johnson at Sydney (Bike and Ped - there are daycares and schools access routes along Sydney)
3. S. Higuera at Madonna (bike and ped)
4. S. Higuera at Bridge Street (bike and ped)
5. S. Higuera and Tank Farm (Right hand yield lane from Tank Farm to Johnson leads to fast moving cars with that
make it difficult to cross as a ped)
6. S. Higuera at Las Praderas (help get neighborhood connected to TJ and Food For Less shopping center)
7. Grand at McCullum (access to Teach and SLOCA schools from other side of the street requires a long multi block
detour for a stop sign or signalized intersection. It is also hard to make a left turn into the school on bike when
headed northbound on Grand because of the number and speeds of cars on Grand)
8. Chorro at Mill (pretty much no car will stop for a ped waiting to cross)
9. Broad at Upham (very few cars stop for ped even when sign is flashing)
10. High Street at Deli (lots of foot traffic to the deli with no "legal" ped crossing)
11. High Street (needs traffic calming along entire stretch)
Intersection improvements that are planned already but not shown on map:
1. Broad at Murray (raised intersection as part of Anholm Greenway)
2. Orcutt and Sacramento (HAWK crossing as part of development)
General observation about improving ped crossings:
Cars generally stop well past the stripping which is considered a "failed to stop" per vehicle code. This behavior makes it
stressful to enter into any intersection because most drivers don't plan to stop (or dont stop at all) until they are within
the pedestrian crossing zone. Consider adding something into the toolbox of treatments to apply ways to slow vehicles
substantially prior intersection. These could be speed humps/tables, rumble strips, bot dots, enhanced markings, and
signage, and better enforcement.
Thank you,
Garrett Otto
