Hi Adam,
Please find a letter attached here expressing Spin's support for alternative transportation options in the City of San Luis
Obispo, and a desire to work with the city when it's ready to consider shared scooter options for residents. Would you
please share the attached letter with the Mayor and Council? If you'd prefer that I send the letter to the Mayor and
Council directly, I'd be happy to do so.
Please don't hesitate to let us know if you have any questions.
Best,
TIM ALBORG

Dear Honorable Mayor and Council Members,
I write to you today to offer Spin’s support of the city’s efforts to expand transportation
options for its residents (Item 9 - “Study Session on Shared Bicycle Services”). Spin
provides shared electric scooters to residents in cities across the country. We support
the right of cities to regulate their own streets and promote the use of alternative
transportation options such as shared bicycles and scooters as a means to encourage a
cleaner environment and decrease the number of Vehicle Miles Traveled (VMT),
especially as it relates to single-occupancy automobile trips.
During the electric scooter frenzy of 2018 and 2019, Spin made the unique decision to
launch its fleet of scooters only with the explicit permission of its city and campus
partners. This was a markedly different approach from other dockless vehicle operators,
whose “rogue” behavior had cities and campuses scrambling to set rules. Spin’s ethos -
to invest in long-term value, rather than short-term gains - inspired Ford’s acquisition of
the company in late 2018, providing Spin the backing to bring sustainable transportation
programs to nearly 100 urban and campus settings by 2020.
Spin also works with private property owners or local governments from Portland, OR to
Washington, DC to install charging stations where Spin scooters can be parked. These
charging stations allow a portion of our fleet to be charged without our operations
vehicles doing manual pick-up and delivery of vehicles. These charging stations are
both solar-powered and ensure parking compliance. They provide a consistent supply of
charged scooters in high-demand locations. Spin is proud to lead the industry in
deploying these solar-powered charging stations for our users and city partners.
While Spin is growing quickly, we remain committed to our partnership-first principles,
and to launching scooter-share programs in a safe, sustainable, and collaborative way.
Spin is committed to working with the City of San Luis Obispo, when the city is ready, to
offer shared scooters to its residents. We make a commitment to you not to “rogue
launch” as our competitors have done in other cities, and to work collaboratively with
you when you are ready to offer additional transportation options.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns you might have about
Spin.
