Subject:Vaping in SLO
Dear esteemed Council members,
I will not be able to attend tomorrow evening’s city council meeting ( I will be in a Medical Association meeting in Santa
Barbara), but I would briefly like to extend my support and endorsement of a ban on the sale of flavored tobacco
products in the City of SLO.
I have NEVER seen anything quite like the vaping epidemic in the late grade school, middle and high school students
here. Particularly, I have become very distressed about the increasing national reports of severe pulmonary damage that
seem to be resulting from use. There are also well documented adverse effects on the neurodevelopment of adolescent
brains. Serious studies are happening, and talk of banning the vaping method is occurring throughout many
municipalities. I think it would be beneficial from a public health view and as a physician I'd ask you to consider the
banning of such products until the the FDA evaluative processes are completed. I think it’s pretty urgent.
As a member of the California Medical Association Board of Trustees from District V ( SLO, Santa Barbara and Ventura
Counties), I extend the support of the CMA’s policy position which recommends the banning of all flavored tobacco
products. Further as an individual, the removal of all vaping products from sale in SLO would be a significant public
health advance here consistent with our past traditions regarding tobacco use.
Thank you so very much for consideration of this very urgent public health concern.
Respectfully and my very best, Rene' Bravo, MD Pediatrician and member, Board of Trustees , California Medical
Association.
