Subject:dog shooting incident -- New Times
Hi Capt. Smith,
Please see the below questions about the police dog shooting incident on Sept. 26 on Santa Rosa Street. My deadline is
tomorrow, Oct. 2, at noon. Thanks.
1) Who made the original call reporting a burglary? Was it determined that no crime was taking place? How many
officers were dispatched to the home?
2) Is there a police report from this incident that's available? If so, i am requesting it. I am also requesting the body cam
footage of the firing officer.
3) What is the protocol in a shooting incident like this as a department? How is it reviewed and how is the officer's use
of force deemed reasonable or appropriate, or not? What are potential consequences if it's deemed inappropriate? How
are those conclusions arrived at? Are those consequences ‐‐ or lack of consequences ‐‐ made available to the public?
4) Does the department believe the officer's use of force was appropriate in this situation? Why or why not?
5) Does SLOPD have any animal/dog officer conduct policies or any animal/dog officer field training?
6) If not, will the department consider them in light of this incident?
Peter
