HomeMy WebLinkAbout10/23/2019 Item 2, Roach Wilbanks, Megan From:J&G < PM To:Advisory Bodies Subject:Please Approve SLO Rep / Garage Project Dear Planning Commissioners: We are writing today to urge your continued support of and ultimate approval for the SLO Rep Theatre and Palm/Nipomo Parking Garage. We’re relative newcomers in the 70-plus year history of SLO Rep, having attended slightly over 100 performances since 2005. But we’re not new to theatre, having come from Tucson, AZ, where they too struggled with growing pains for their city and a vision for the arts. Before that, it was LA where it was 2-3 hours on the freeway to get to the Disney Center or the Segerstrom in Orange County to enjoy top-drawer, professional theatre. How fortunate we are to be visioning our new state-of-the-art theatre. It seems to us that your vision of our City’s core includes much to draw both citizens and visitors. While the size and style of some new downtown projects have raised more than just eyebrows, you approved. When transportation modes and patterns were reconsidered, you persevered. When voices spoke against housing developments you chose to forge ahead. And while we are th aware of a well-intentioned but 11 hour opposition to this project we would urge you to once again keep your eye on the ball. To those who would prefer to slow growth or stop progress, we would say that it is far better to acknowledge and plan accordingly. This is governance at its best. We have already personally committed to help the City and SLO Rep realize this dream. In a new theatre that doubles our current capacity we can welcome even more arts ‘consumers’ to downtown SLO, thereby enriching our region both economically and artistically. The years of planning, the collaboration, and the melding of civic support, public space and private dollars is finally coming to fruition and we stand with the over 23,000 other SLO Rep theatre lovers in a standing ovation. Please stay the course on the SLO Rep Theatre and Palm/Nipomo Parking Garage. Respectfully, Jane and George Roach 1
