IN SUPPORT OF SLO REPERTORY THEATRE’S PROPOSED NEW STRUCTURE:
I am a long-time county resident who has attended productions at SLO Repertory Theatre (formerly Little Theatre) for over
twenty years. While the productions have always been good, they have seen a quantum leap in quality in the last ten years
under Kevin Harris’ leadership. The recent evolution from community theatre to a professional theatre company not only
means actors (and directors, technicians, etc.) now get paid, it allows for exciting new opportunities and a new level of
excellence. This is already evident in recent productions such as “Million Dollar Quartet” and “The Glass Menagerie."
But the problem is that the theatre is still operating in its “cute” and “cozy” long-time location on Morro Street. The company
has long struggled with the inadequacies of this building (if you’re a woman and you’ve stood in line for the bathroom you
know of what i speak), but it has now reached a critical point. The structure being proposed is going to remedy the existing
problems but will go much further: two distinct theatre spaces, spaces for rehearsals and for our children’s ACT program
among other needed amenities (including, yes, better rest rooms!).
I very recently joined the Board of Directors of SLO REP because I am thrilled about the direction SLO REP is taking and want to
be a part of its growth. But that growth can only happen if the theatre is allowed to develop the new space to accommodate
its new vision. I’ve been privy to the plans for the complex and not only is it brilliant in its layout and use of space, it is going to
be gorgeous facility, blending in to its surroundings in downtown San Luis Obispo in an unobtrusive way.
Thank you for supporting this vital project.
Sincerely,
Susan Minker, M.D.
