Subject: Approve the REP project
Dear City Council Members:
I’m writing to urge you to approve the proposed Palm-Nipomo parking garage-theater project.
As Chief of Police for nearly 15 years, I always wanted our downtown core to have a variety of
entertainment venues to better balance our bar scene. Assuming the SLO Repertory Theatre can raise the
1
construction funds, doubling the theater’s capacity would be a significant leap forward in creating a more
culturally vibrant Downtown SLO.
I also realize that this project may mean the razing of some interesting buildings, notably the 1930s-era
Heyd adobe. While I appreciate the desire to preserve relics of our past, the adobe, at its best, can become
nothing more than a static curiosity piece. Realistically, a new home for SLO Rep will draw hundreds of
people nearly every week of the year to our downtown. A preserved adobe simply could not match SLO
Rep as a draw – nor be as culturally enriching.
Please approve this project.
Jim Gardiner
