Subject:Please approve SLO REP Theatre Project
I am writing to urge you to approve San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre’s plans for its new theatre. I have
been on the theatre’s board of directors for ten years. I have seen it evolve from a delightful, amateur
community theatre to a serious professional organization with the potential to be of enormous cultural
and economic benefit to San Luis Obispo and our wider central coast community.
The new theatre as designed and planned will:
Enable more members of the community to experience real, live theatre—the kind of theatre
that can “open the mind, nourish the soul and illuminate our shared humanity.”
Be an attractive and iconic addition to the arts and cultural core.
Expand the range and scope of plays that can be offered by utilizing both the 200 seat main
theatre and the smaller “black box” theatre.
Allow more local youth to take advantage of SLO REP’s Academy of Creative Theatre program,
and make possible a new outreach program for local schools.
Draw local people and tourists alike to our downtown who will eat, drink, shop, and stay at our
hotels.
Provide additional jobs for local residents in many capacities.
