Subject:requesting your support of the SLO Repertory Theatre/Palm &
Nipomo parking garage project
Dear Members of the San Luis Obispo City Council and Mayor Harmon,
We are fortunate to live and work in a city that recognizes both the value of a robust, healthy arts
community, and the City’s role in supporting that community, demonstrated by the City’s significant, on-
going and much appreciated support of the Performing Arts Center. I am honored to serve as the PAC’s
Managing Director, as we continue our partnership with the City, the Foundation for the Performing Arts
Center and Cal Poly to support our local performing arts organizations and facilitate a diverse range of
high quality performances by local and touring artists for our community. Thank you for your vision and
commitment to a vibrant, wonderful community demonstrated by your support of the PAC.
th
On November 12, you will have the opportunity to take the next logical step in your commitment to
fostering a vital, impactful arts community by approving the joint San Luis Obispo Repertory
Theatre/Palm & Nipomo parking garage project. I respectfully urge your approval of this vital
project. Its long awaited completion will have a major positive impact on the City’s goal of Downtown
Vitality, providing increased activity and economic impact to a currently under-utlized area in the
downtown core.
As important, this new, larger, purpose-built facility for SLO Rep will be transformative for them,
allowing them to complete their transition to a fully professional resident theatre, which will, in turn,
allow them to elevate the quality of their productions; the number of artists, technicians and staff them
employ; triple the number of patrons they serve; and greatly expand their vitally important youth
education programs. This project is truly a win-win, for both this important organization, and for our
community. Given the significant development of the theatre over the past three years as they’ve
begun the transition from “community” to professional theatre, they are poised to leverage that success
to secure the private support necessary to complete this project and operate successfully in their new
home. With your approval of the project, they can move forward with the certainty they require to
confirm these gifts for their capital campaign.
The SLO Repertory Theatre is ready to move from the space generously provided by the City, but which
they have long outgrown, into a new facility that will enable them to serve our community more
significantly for many years to come. Please support them in this important endeavor by approving this
well designed and thoughtfully developed project.
Thank you,
1
