SUBJECT: Palm/Nipomo Parking Structure and SLOREP Theater, item 10 on 10/12/19
Agenda
TO: Mayor Harmon and City Council:
Please require a more serious review of keeping the Heyd adobe house on the site.
The Heyd adobe can become part of the Theater or a separate small use. Removal of
the adobe will damage and reduce the historic character and value of this area. A
redesign will cost a few thousand dollars, not a million.
Retention on the site is important to keep some of the historic context of this area.
The rush and big push to approve the project as quickly as possible looks like a
quarterback sneak; a strategy to push aside pesky design options and charge through
to a win (your team against the facts and community). The parking studies did not
justify this size and expense of garage. The FEIR did not analyze the retention or
movement of the Heyd adobe in any realistic sense. This rush goes on in the face of
the long years of waiting for the participants to get their project together. This is
when the City should be careful and thorough about the best fit that can be designed
between this historic area and the new uses. For once, show some independence
from staff leadership and think about this rush with some skepticism.
Thank you,
James Lopes
