Dear CHC members:
I am writing you in regards to agenda item #3 - whether to retain the Johnson Building at 778 - 790
Higuera Street on the City's Inventory of Historical Resources, I strongly urge you vote YES to maintain
this building on our city's inventory of historical buildings which should be preserved and maintained for
future generations to enjoy and to gain a better appreciation of our rich history.
With so much new development occurring in our Historic Downtown, I feel it's more important now than
ever before to preserve our historical and noteworthy examples of the architecture and construction
methods of our past. I coincidentally have a postcard on my desk of the very image displayed in Figure 6
of your packet, a photograph of this building from the 1940's.
The rich history and unique architecture of many of our older buildings, particularly in our Downtown
Historic District, is a huge part of what makes San Luis Obispo such a special place both for its residents
and the many tourists drawn to our unique town. If you gradually allow our historic buildings to be razed
by developers who care only about making a profit, you will be contributing to the demise and loss of our
cultural heritage.
Approving the Johnson Building's removal from our inventory of historical resources seems completely
counter to your committee's stated objective of "preserving historic and architecturally significant
buildings."
Please retain the Johnson Building in our City's Inventory of Historical Resources.
Thank you.
John Grady
