RE: SUPPORT FOR – Continued Funding for the CALeVIP -
Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program
Dear Senator Mitchell and Senator Wieckowski,
I am writing on behalf of the City of San Luis Obispo to respectfully request your support to keep
the State’s funding allocation for the CALeVIP Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which
equals to an estimated $5 Million in Transportation Electrification Dollars for Santa Barbara and
San Luis Obispo Counties.
Electric vehicle charging infrastructure is the rare investment that stimulates the economy,
provides construction jobs, and improves quality of life, all while supporting the state’s transition
to a clean energy system and low carbon economy. Now more than ever, local governments need
grant support to deploy electric vehicle charging at speed and scale to recover from the economic
impacts of COVID-19 while transitioning to infrastructure that will allow us to thrive in a changing
climate.
Over the past year, Monterey Bay Community Power (MBCP) has partnered with the Center for
Sustainable Energy (CSE) to implement the CALeVIP – Central Coast Incentive Program. MBCP
began working with regional partners to expand the CALeVIP Program into the communities of
San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara Counties, as well communities in Ventura County. As
members of MBCP, the City of San Luis Obispo strongly relies on the program for funding
electrical vehicle infrastructure projects that help accelerate transportation electrification in the
City and the region.
The City Council adopted a 2020 Legislative Action Platform that includes Climate Action and
explicit City support for funding to pay for infrastructure that meets mandated greenhouse gas
emissions reduction goals. The City of San Luis Obispo City Council requests your support to
