While I was impressed with the majority of the discussion, I was disappointed that some who claim to be all about “inclusivity” talk so divisively (ie “white allies”). This kind of talk seems directly counterintuitive to the message that is trying to be conveyed - one of which is about resiliency, unit and togetherness (as the police chief and city manager mentioned). I also want to address the desire to spend $100,000 of city funds to, as it seems, prove that our city is not racist (thus aligning our budget with our values as the mayor claims). While the intent may be made in good faith, I do not think now is the appropriate time. We have a severe budget deficit combined with a failing economy, and now additional safety costs to address these (un permitted?) protests and riots. To discuss any type of spending at this time should be deliberately thought out so as to ensure the overall fiscal integrity of our community. Should this funding be approved, the expectations of where and how every dollar is spent should be calculated prior to the authorization of such spending, with public input. (Side note, how much does the city currently spend on inclusive/diversity/discrimination type trainings?) Regarding the wish to make police obsolete and have a tear gas free city, I highly oppose such and feel that is a complete slap in the face to our brave and professional law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily, simply by wearing a uniform (as a kind reminder, the police don’t write the laws). In conclusion, I hope that no spending is approved tonight and I thank our local leaders who are taking clear and direct action to protect our city from any and all criminal behavior as opposed to quietly and indirectly fueling the fire. Stay safe, Amanda Sent from my iPhone 1
