My name is Kanika and I have been a resident of SLO county for over 5 years and a recent graduate of Cal Poly.
As you know, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and countless other unarmed citizens have been unjustly and unfairly killed because of our country's systematically racist criminal
justice system.
In light of recent events, I ask that in today's review of the 2020-2021 budget, you reallocate some of the funds currently directed towards the police department into other departments
and organizations that are aimed at helping our neighbors and community members instead. Statistics show that crime rates tend to drop in areas where members of the community have their
basic needs met and feel safe and secure.
I believe this is a small request to begin the address the inequalities faced in our country, however I firmly believe diverting some funding towards organizations aimed at addressing
some of the inequality is a reasonable place to start.
