But the actions of the police force against protesters yesterday evening are frankly disgusting. I thought we lived in a city that held its police to a higher standard of conduct, but the police force in SLO has been allowed to crush the First Amendment rights of the people and as of now they have suffered no repercussions. As it stands, the police are allowed to act as they please with no oversight from the public. This is unacceptable. The police force exists to serve the people, not to crush them. The lack of a civilian oversight council that can prosecute unlawful police action is a great failing of the city and the city council. The creation of a civilian oversight council is necessary to protect the liberties of the people of SLO and I hope that you will consider its creation. Thank you. -Nate Ball 1
