Subject:REALLOCATE POLICE FUNDS
Dear City Council,
My name is Ella Herrmann and I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and a Cal Poly student.
As you know George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many other unnamed others have been
killed because of the systematically racist justice system in this country.
In light of these events, I ask that in today’s review of the 2020-2021 budget, you reallocate some of the funds directed
to the police department to other programs and forms of policing, including community policing, community
development, and diversity, equity, and inclusion line items.
I believe that this is a small request to begin to address the massive inequities and systems of oppression that have been
perpetuated by governmental inaction. Though this will not fix the issue, it will move the city in a positive direction and
demonstrate a tangible commitment to address the systematic racism.
Thank you for all you do for the City of San Luis Obispo and for your time and consideration.
