As you know with the recent death of George Floyd, many have decided to take action, since this case of Floyd is far from being the first. Many blacks across the country have been killed via police brutality and this country’s racist criminal justice system. And it is time for us to take action too. In light of these events, we ask that in today’s review of the 2020-21 budget, you reallocate some of the funds currently directed towards the police department to other programs and alternative form of policing, such as community policing, community development, or even a specific diversity, equity, and inclusion line team. We believe this is a small request to begin address the massive inequalities and systems of oppression that have been perpetrated by government inaction. Though this will not fix the problem, it will move our city in a positive direction and demonstrate a tangible commitment to addressing systematic racism. Thank you for all you do for the city of San Luis Obispo. I believe that together we can make change. I hope that you consider these actions. Thank you, Zoey Nylund 1
