To the SLO City Council,
My name is Ciara Helland and I am a resident of SLO and a student at Cal Poly.
The recent murders of people such as but not limited to, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, or Breonna Taylor,
has exposed our country's systematic racist criminal justice system.
In response to this, myself along with many of my peers ask that in today's review of the 2020-21 budget, you
reallocate some of the funds currently directed toward the police department. These funds should be moved
to other more beneficial programs including alternative forms of policing.
This is a small request to begin the long road ahead, trying to right the inequities and systems of oppression
that are currently perpetuated by government inaction. This is not a fix, only the first step of many.
Thank you for all you do for the City of SLO and for your time.
