Dear City Council,
My name is Angie Klein and I am a parent of a resident and student of San Luis Obispo at Cal Poly.
In light of the events surrounding the countless who have been killed because of our country’s systematically racist
criminal justice system, I ask that you re-evaluate your budget.
In today’s review of the 2020-2021 budget, I am requesting that you consider reallocating some of the funds currently
directed toward the police department to other programs and alternative forms of policing.
An example of alternative policing could include, but is in no way limited to, community policing, community
development, or even a specific diversity, equity, and inclusion line item.
I believe this is a small request to begin addressing the massive inequities and systems in place today that contribute to
oppression. Though this will not fix the problem, it will move our city towards a positive direction and demonstrate a
tangible commitment to addressing systematic racism.
Thank you for all that you do for our children, students, and the community of the City of San Luis Obispo. Thank you
also for your open heart to listen to the community and to consider this request.
