HomeMy WebLinkAbout2020-2021 Budget request (2)Dear City Council, I am a Cal Poly Student and will be continuing to live in SLO for the next two years. These times, in which instances of police brutality against POC are finally coming to light, give us an opportunity to take action and to affect positive change. It is clear that the way our system of law enforcement currently works creates a reality of fear and oppression: it is very easy for someone on the police force to get away with violent behavior and general misconduct due to the qualified immunity act. One small way of working towards a more just United States of America is by addressing these issues during today’s review of the 2020-2021 budget meeting. We ask that you relocate some of the funds currently directed toward the police department to programs and alternative forms of policing (community policing, community development, and specific diversity, equity, and line item). While this will not resolve all issues tied to systematic racism, it is a step in the right direction and will demonstrate our city’s commitment to addressing the systems of oppression that exist in our country today. Kind Regards Beatrix Vernet
