Dear City Council,
My name is Erin Francisco and I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and a student at Cal Poly. As you are aware,
recent killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and many more unnamed others by police
officers around the country have laid bare our country's systemically racist criminal justice system.
In light of these events, we ask that in today's review of the 2020-21 budget, you reallocate some of the funds
currently directed toward the police department toward other programs and alternative forms of policing.
Possibilities include regular trauma counseling, community policing, or community development.
We believe that this is a small request in beginning to address the massive inequalities and systems of
oppression that have been perpetuated for far too long by government inaction.
