Subject:Reallocation of Funding
Dear City Council,
My name is Josephine Braun, I am a resident of San Luis Obispo and a Cal Poly graduate student. I have lived here for 5
years and consider myself to be well-integrated into the community.
As you are aware, George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, Tony McDade, and so many other unarmed black and
brown people have been killed because of our country’s systemically racist criminal justice system. You want peaceful
protests - however, when peaceful protests happen in SLO, SLO PD responds with rubber bullets and tear gas. This is
unjustifiable and inexcusable. This makes me ashamed to call San Luis Obispo home, and should make you ashamed as
well. My own father was a police officer. I do not believe that all police officers are bad people; however, SLO PD is a
part of the problem and you must help fix this.
In light of these events, I am asking that you reallocate some of the funds currently directed toward the police
department to other programs and alternative forms of policing, such as community policing, community development,
or a specific diversity, equity, and inclusion line item.
San Luis Obispo is a difficult place for people of color. I ask that you help lead the way in direct, systemic change.
Respectfully,
Josephine Braun, E.I.T.
